Sited at the confluence of the Limpopo and Shashe Rivers, in northern South Africa, the Mapungubwe National Park celebrates the site of a technologically advanced ancient trading civilization in the context of a natural setting.
The complex rocky landscape was both the inspiration for the design and the source of the materials for the construction of the new Interpretation Centre, resulting in a composition of structures that are authentically rooted to their location. The building, set at the foot of a mesa at the park entrance, is visually contained by three hollow cairns that evoke rock route-markers commonly found in Southern African cultures. Timbrel vaulting, a simple expression of natural forces and materials, is used to construct dramatic cave like spaces. From a distance the undulating rock clad vaults blend into the landscape. On approach the thin arched edges are exposed and the vaults soar and seem to billow out of the earth.
Delicate walkways create a zigzagging ramped route through the complex, through exhibition spaces, gently climbing the mesa to the highest point on the site, providing the visitor with a multiplicity of experiences and views, evoking the complex social interactions of the many cultures that have traversed the land.
The project’s agenda extends beyond the presentation of the area’s history to awaken an understanding of the vulnerability of the local ecology. These objectives are manifested in the construction process of the Centre in which unemployed local people were trained in the manufacture of stabilised earth tiles and in building the timbrel vaults. The masons have continued to use these skills by using the remaining tiles for their houses in nearby villages. Thus, the Centre is not only emblematic of the site, Africa and its unique place in the origin of the world become part of a story that is still unfolding, of culture developing in symbiosis with its natural legacy.

A unique office environment for a unique and talented group of individuals. The new office fit out for the Famous American Business man, Philanthropist and former head of the Rwandan Development Board, Joe Ritchie.
His new premises, a floor of a glass clad speculative office block in Chicago could well be another conventional, sterile office environment. He turned to Peter Rich Architects and Light Earth Designs to create an environment that felt lofty and open but allowed for discreet working areas. Our concept is to create a beautiful, dynamic and lofty earth tiled soffit, formed of triangular vaults spanning between the existing steel structure. Under this, aedicules of different shapes and heights, made of environmentally friendly ‘beetle damaged pine’ will contain working areas.
All materials are sourced to be natural, sustainable and low maintenance. The fit out will create a space of calm and dignity, a canvas for Joe to fill with his own fascinating autobiography.
The vaulting is constructed using earth tiles laid onto a CNC cut faceted latex backing mould. The mould is created by 3D scanning a reverse model at half scale and converting the information into a 3D CAD model. The CAD model contains all information required for fabrication of the mould.
Rwanda Cricket Stadium

The project is part of work undertaken by Light Earth Designs for the Rwanda Cricket Stadium Foundation over a 5-year period on how Rwanda can transition from an agriculture-based economy to development using local home grown labour intensive construction techniques, thereby avoiding imports, lowering carbon, and building skills and economies. The primary enclosure of the cricket stadium, the vaults, adapts ancient Mediterranean tile-vaulting (using compressed soil-cement tiles) to a moderate seismic context by using geogrid reinforcing in the layers and bearing the springing points of the doubly curved vaults on the ground.
The vaults follow the natural resolution of forces toward the ground, closely mimicking the parabolic geometry of a bouncing ball and evoking the cherished hilly topography of Rwanda. Geogrid is added to give some seismic protection, developed by research in architecture and engineering at Cambridge University. The shells are waterproofed then topped with local broken granite (found everywhere across the country), blending into the natural palate while the granite adds weight and stability.
The building grows out of the cut soil banking that was formed as the pitch was levelled – thus becoming part of the landscape. The banking creates a wonderful natural amphitheatre with great views to the pitch and wetland valley beyond.
Whilst the language of the building speaks about progression and dynamism through extreme structural efficiency, the materials speak of the natural, the hand made and the human. It a building made by Rwandans using Rwandan materials. The imperfections are celebrated – they are human and beautiful – and when combined with the layering of natural textures the building becomes imbuesand celebrates this wonderful place – a place where we have worked and lived for over 5 years.

‘Sustainable Shells’ – Timbrel vaulting using soil stabilised tiles in a developing world context has recently been awarded winner of the Built environment category at the 2010 Earth Awards in recognition of the potential future positive impact of this exciting innovation on people’s lives in the developing world. The technology minimises the cost and high embodied energy of imported materials and can empower local unskilled labourers by engaging them in both the production of the tiles and the construction of the vaults.
As part of the Earth Awards and the ‘Start Festival – A Garden Party to Make a Difference ’ (sponsored by the Prince of Wales), the practice in collaboration with Michael Ramage constructed a small vaulted Earth tiled pavilion in the grounds of Lancaster House, next door to St James Palace in central London.
The pavilion consisted of three simple overlapping catenary vaults of varying heights, each stiffened in plan and section with an elegant flare. The vaults were built in only 14 days, using hand pressed tiles made out of waste soil from a London building site. Other materials were sourced to have minimal environmental impact, and to reduce waste. The plywood blanks used to form the tiles were laid to form the pavilion flooring and stacked to create exhibition stands. A slatted timber screen, designed to filter the low angle morning light was constructed from green sweet chestnut coppice cuttings.
Visitors are introduced to the technology though an exhibit of the hand press, the soil and the resulting earth tiles. The plywood exhibition stands illustrate the build process on entrance and show examples of buildings or future projects using the technology on exit. Visitors walk through a serene space exiting though a low vault where they can touch and feel the quality of the soil finish.
In this high profile context, we demonstrated just how economic, beautiful and elegant the results of this simple technology can be.
